Local Vocals is a choir based in Dorset but rather uniquely, rehearsing in five different locations, all led by Lesley Whatley.

Initially formed in 2002 as an adult education project with 3 choirs in Bridport, Dorchester and Wareham, Lesley has expanded the group to include community choirs in Wimborne and Sherborne.

We sing totally Acapella and no musical knowledge is required by our members. Most of our songs are personally arranged by Lesley in 4 parts and she teaches us everything by ear. Remarkably, she holds all the parts of every song in her head and, with no notice, she can recall songs that we have not sung for several years.

Our repertoire includes popular songs from the past such as Barbara Ann and My Girl but also encompasses traditional world songs from as far apart as Argentina in the West and New Zealand in the East and everywhere in between. Some of our repertoire and their origins is posted on our Songs page.

All five choirs are taught exactly the same songs at the same time and we can all join together for major events such as the annual Festival of the Voice at Stourhead NT, knowing that we are all singing from the same song sheet.

Other than the major events, we also perform with smaller groups for local events which might just involve one of the local groups or maybe a combination of two or three.

New members are always welcome and details of each group's rehearsal schedule are posted on their individual pages.

If you would like to hear us, our diary page will tell you when and where we are performing.
